How We Test Tools

Our rigorous methodology for testing power tools, workshop equipment, and home improvement gear. No shortcuts, no pay-for-play.

1. Unboxing & First Impressions

We document what's in the box, the quality of the included accessories, and whether the manual is actually useful. A tool that ships with a garbage blade or a useless manual loses points right away.

2. Real-World Job Site Testing

This is the most important step. We don't test tools on a clean workbench with perfect conditions. We take them to actual job sites and workshops:

  • Power tools get used for framing, drywall, demo, and finish work
  • Pressure washers clean driveways, decks, siding, and vehicles
  • Generators run actual loads — not just a lamp
  • Outdoor equipment handles real yard work in real weather

We track: power delivery, battery life, ergonomics, noise level, vibration, dust collection, and whether anything breaks or malfunctions.

3. Measurement & Data Collection

For tools where specs matter, we measure:

  • Actual PSI and GPM on pressure washers (not just the box claims)
  • Battery runtime under continuous load
  • Decibel levels at operator position
  • Accuracy of laser guides and angle indicators
  • Weight with and without batteries

4. Long-Term Durability Tracking

We don't just test a tool once and write a review. We keep using it. If a tool develops problems after 3 months of regular use, we update the review. If a battery platform stops holding a charge after a year, you'll know about it.

5. Price & Value Analysis

We compare each tool against competitors at similar price points. A $200 tool that outperforms a $400 tool is a win. A $400 tool that breaks after 6 months is a rip-off. We factor in warranty length, replacement part availability, and customer service quality.

6. Comparison Testing

For head-to-head comparisons (DeWalt vs Milwaukee, corded vs cordless, electric vs gas), we test both tools side by side on the same tasks. Same material, same operator, same conditions. No cherry-picking.

What We Don't Do

- We don't accept free products from manufacturers

  • We don't let brands review our content before publication
  • We don't write reviews based on spec sheets alone
  • We don't give 5-star ratings to tools we haven't physically used
  • We don't hide negative findings to protect affiliate relationships

Our Review Team

Every review is written by one of our four trade professionals. Mike Torres (18 years as a contractor) reviews power tools and pressure washers. Dan Keller (master electrician) covers generators and electrical tools. Rachel Chen (DIY expert) handles outdoor equipment and budget picks. Tom Vasquez (professional woodworker) reviews shop equipment and precision tools.

No AI. No templates. No BS. Just real people who use tools for a living, telling you what works and what doesn't.

Why Trust Our Reviews

Every tool we review is purchased at retail price and tested on real job sites by licensed tradespeople — not unboxed for a YouTube thumbnail. We never accept free products or payment for reviews. Learn exactly how we test tools →
